Phylum Arthropoda

Main Characteristics

  • Segmented body, can be differentiated into head, thorax and abdomen
  • Head and thorax often fused to form cephalothorax
  • Jointed legs for locomotion, one pair each on some or all body segments 
  • Exoskeleton of chitinous cuticle, shed at intervals (moulting)
  • Sexes usually separate.

Arthropods are further divided into classes:

  1. Crustacea
  2. Myriapoda
  3. Insecta
  4. Arachnida
