Friction

Force of friction is a contact force and always acts along the surfaces in a direction opposite to that of the motion of the body.

Friction opposes the motion of objects, causes wear and tear and is responsible for loss of mechanical energy. But then, it is only due to friction that you are able to walk, drive vehicles and stop moving vehicles. Friction is said to be a necessary evil.
