Alcohols can be dehydrated to alkenes. Alkenes are prepared from alcohols by dehydration in the presence of a suitable dehydrating agent such as

  1. Al2O3
  2. concentrated H2SO4

In the dehydration of higher alcohols, the major product obtained is according to the Saytzeff’s Rule.

Ease of Dehydration

The ease of dehydration follows the following order among alcohols:

tertiary alcohols > secondary alcohols > primary alcohols
