Density of Alkanes

The density of alkanes increases with the increase in molecular mass which increases with the increase in the number of carbon atoms.

All alkanes are lighter than water i.e. their density is less than 1.0 g/cm³. The maximum density in the case of alkanes is 0.89 g/cm³. The lower density of alkanes than water is due to the absence of strong intermolecular attractions in alkanes.
