Detection of Carbon & Hydrogen in Organic Compounds
Carbon and hydrogen are detected by heating the compound with copper(II) oxide.
Carbon present in the compound is oxidized to carbon dioxide. Carbon dioxide is tested with lime-water, which develops turbidity.
Hydrogen is oxidized to water. Water is tested with anhydrous copper sulphate, which turns blue.
