Nitration of Alkanes

Nitroalkanes can be prepared by the nitration of alkanes in vapour phase. For this reaction, a mixture of the alkane and nitric acid is passed through a metal tube at about 680 K. This reaction always yields a mixture of compounds due to the cleavage of the starting alkane. For example, propane on nitration gives a mixture of following compounds.
