Nitration of Benzene

The chemical reaction in which a hydrogen atom of benzene ring is replaced by –NO₂ group, is called nitration.

It is carried out in the presence of nitrating mixture - a mixture of conc. HNO₃ and conc. H₂SO₄. Nitronium ion NO₂⁺ so formed acts as an electrophile.
