Physical Properties of Aromatic Hydrocarbons

Benzene and its homologues are colourless liquids having a characteristic odour.

They are immiscible in water but are miscible in all proportions with organic solvents such as alcohol, ether, petrol, etc. They dissolve fats and many other organic substances.

Most of the aromatic hydrocarbons are lighter than water.

Their boiling points show a gradual increase with increasing molecular mass e.g. benzene (b.p. 353 K), toluene (b.p. 383 K) and ethylbenzene (b.p. 409 K) and so on.
