Ring Substitution in Aromatic Nitro Compounds

The –NO₂ group is a deactivating and meta- directing group for electrophilic substitution reactions. It is due to the electron withdrawing tendency of –NO₂ group. Thus, nitrobenzene on halogenation, nitration or sulphonation gives the meta-substituted products.
